It was surprisingly common, one of our wide receivers played trombone, and our star running-back played sax. We had a relatively small school (average for our part of the country, but small relative to most places in the US). So a lot of orgs were kind of powerless to stop you as long as you didn’t miss events from one commitment to attend another.

(Which was nothing compared to the $60 million stadia out in the suburbs). And in college, the stadium used for all the city’s high school teams was usually filled up every game night. Oh yeah, I’m a northerner and most of us are kinda apathetic about sports. There are still a lot of people that care, but we don’t have the whole school turning up for every game. It depends on the size of the school, how much time/effort/money the school puts into sports, and how successful our team has been.
